Kid Portrait Tips

Photo sessions are fun especially when everyone is well rested and fed. We plan the session around naps and the best time for everyone being photographed. Plan plenty of time to arrive and relax. There are optimum times for best lighting for outdoor photography when we have a gentle light which is usually early morning or late afternoon /early evening. We will plan together the best time for your family and the right location with the best light.

What to Bring

Favorite hats, blankets, stuffed animals. Also having a little supply of “clean” snacks can be helpful if kidlets get hungry. If pets are involved treats for them can be a useful tool.

What to Wear

Keep it simple: Creams, pastels, blues, and jean material works well. Solid colors work best and help keep the focus on the child/family and not the clothing. If your session is for a group or family, the group’s clothing should coordinate. Shoes stand out at times so bare feet or very plain shoes (similar coloring for groups) work best.

What Not to Wear

Anything busy; red, floral prints and distracting patterns or any large logos. If you especially like all black or all white it is good idea to also bring jackets for the layered look. Sometimes when everyone is in the exact same colors people blend together. It is better not to have too high of a contrast colors such as black and white together which can be distracting from your expressions and puts more emphasis on the clothing.

Remember wear something that makes you feel good about yourself and highlights your good features. It is always a good idea to bring a few different changes of clothes, but there is no need to worry. Once you arrive we will decide, together what will photograph best.
